Kid Cudi is walking back comments he made on social media after sparking backlash from Michael Jackson fans. The rapper and multi-disciplinary artist took to video to apologize for a tweet where he suggested that Michael Jackson’s greatness was rooted “just in music,” a remark that many felt diminished the global impact of the King of Pop.
The situation unfolded after a Twitter user told Cudi, “Can never surpass MJ.” In response, Cudi wrote:
“Michael was the greatest, but he was just music. I’m thinkin more than music. I wanna be known as one of the greatest becuz of my range creatively in the arts. Music, visual arts (painting), fashion, directing, acting, etc.”
The wording immediately drew heat, with fans interpreting the comment as downplaying Jackson’s cultural, artistic, and humanitarian legacy. Within hours, Cudi posted a video clarifying his intentions and apologizing to MJ’s fanbase.
In the video, he emphasized that he never meant to disrespect Michael Jackson, acknowledging Jackson’s influence not only on music but on entertainment and culture as a whole. Cudi explained that he was simply trying to express his own aspirations to excel across multiple creative disciplines.
“I worded it wrong,” he admitted, noting that he understands why fans were upset. “Michael Jackson is the greatest to ever do it in so many ways. I’ve always been inspired by him. I would never disrespect that.”
Cudi closed his message with love for the MJ community and reiterated that his goal is to push his own artistic boundaries — not compare himself to a legend. The apology has since begun circulating widely, with fans appreciating the clarity and accountability.
