Lauryn Hill is arguably one of the greatest “what ifs” in music history. Despite one solo album and two group albums with the Fugees, she’s still considered one of the greatest artists of her era. But one thing has plagued fans minds for years: why did she only make one album? On Friday (May 15th), fans got their answer directly from the source.
Why Did Lauryn Hill Not Make A Second Album?
In an explainer from Hip Hop Instagram page Fraim, the account laid out their hypothesis. The account cited: “overwhelming industry pressure, battles over creative control, emotional exhaustion from fame, and a growing desire to protect her freedom and personal life.”
However, Lauryn Hill herself saw the post, and took the narrative into her own hands. After she replied that she disagreed, Ms. Hill set the record straight with a long post.
“When you’re inspired and desire to be principled, what doesn’t get talked about enough is the drain… Nor the challenge to find safety so that you can create with integrity,” Ms. Hill posted. “Most see opportunity as dollars only and often exclude the ‘sense’. The Score nor the Miseducation were made because we were ‘allowed’ to represent what we did. We fought for every inch. Wild success can cause greed that begins to denigrate the art for the money. We’re people living through all this. These conversations should allow for more nuance.
She then touched on how artists go through phases of creativity and experimentation , using her unofficial second album as example.
“There were people who hated the [MTV] Unplugged album and yet some today swear by its significance,” Ms Hill posted. “I was like a Harriet Tubman figure in some respects running to speak difficult truths to power before certain forces tried to close those doors. If it was so easy to do, where is that expression now on the world stage? Systems fear what they can’t control. Creativity is most potent when it’s free. If I did nothing else, I introduced standards and possibilities to a generation that didn’t know they could operate on that level before then.”
She finished by saying she does many things without the support of “the system.”

How Did Fans React To Lauryn Hill’s Comments?
Naturally, fans were pretty split on Ms. Hill’s comments, with some even dropping a TLDR interpretation of what she said.
“The people that made Miseducation weren’t properly compensated so they sued her and now she can’t work with them,” one user posted.
“Already made herself a staple as the goat, legends like her don’t need to keep pushing out music for their name to ring on forever,” another user posted. “She’s 1 of the if not the greatest women to rap and she has one of the greatest albums of all time with a lot more.”
“Let me save you some time: it’s because she stole the first one and had to settle out of court with all of the artists who went unpaid and without credit,” another user posted.
Notably, Grammy-winning musician Robert Glasper has accused Hill of being a bad person to collaborate with.
““You’ve already stolen all of my friends’ music,” Glasper said in an interview with 979TheBox. “Miseducation was made by great musicians and producers that I know personally. You got a big hand off of music you didn’t even write. Those songs were written by other people and they did not get their credit.”
Hill eturned to the stage in a surprise appearance with Kanye West at the second night of his SoFi shows.
