Legendary hip-hop DJ Funk Master Flex dropped a bomb on fans on Thursday (August 28). But it wasn’t one of his usual bombs. This one had a much more somber tone.
Funk Flex Announces Departure From Hot 97
The famed radio DJ announced that he will be leaving the radio station Hot 97 after more than 30 years with the company. He took to social media to inform fans that his final show will be this coming Labor Day.
“THIS MONDAY, LABOR DAY, SEPTEMBER 1ST, [Will BE MY LAST SHOW ON HOT97 AT 7 PM!” He wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, on August 28. “ALL THINGS COME TO AN END! END OF AN ERA THAT I ENJOYED VERY MUCH! I SUPER ENJOYED IT ALL! I WILL MAKE THE LAST SHOW A GREAT ONE! APPRECIATE EVERYONE WHO HAS SUPPORTED ME OVER THE YEARS!”
Following the announcement, fans flooded Funk Flex’s comments section with reactions to his news.
“END OF AN ERA INDEED! We’re gonna need another classic moment before you go out with a BNG, Flex!” one fan wrote.
“We are living in the end of times, the Mayans were talking about wtf,” another user added.
“Wow… That really is the end of an era… Going to be weird not having Funk Flex at Hot 97… It will not be the same,” a third user said.
Over the past few years, Flex’s show became a hotbed for top talent to come through and freestyle over iconic beats. Meek Mill, Pusha T, and Black Thought are just a few of the names that have come through his show and shut the building down.
But Flex’s show also became the place where new music was debuted as well. Some of his most iconic drops included Pusha T’s Drake Diss Story of Adidon and Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Otis.
It remains unclear whether Funk Flex is retiring from hosting altogether or if he is just changing platforms. But we wish him all the best in whatever his next move may be.
