On Monday (March 9), the NBA dropped the hammer on the Atlanta Hawks’ plans for Magic City Night. A commemoration of one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
Kornet Speaks Out After NBA Nixes ‘Magic City Night’
When the Hawks announced their plan to commemorate the iconic gentlemen’s club, it was met with a lot of backlash. One of the biggest critics was Spurs big man Luke Kornet.
Following the NBA’s decision, Kornet said that he felt the decision to cancel the Hawks’ Magic City Night felt “appropriate,” and revealed that there were many players who reached out to him who “felt similarly” about the commemoration.
After the Hawks announced their plans to pay homage to Magic City, Kornet penned a letter to the league. Stating that allowing the Hawks to commemorate the gentlemen’s club would “reflect poorly” on them.
“Allowing this night to go forward without protest would reflect poorly on us as an NBA community, specifically in being complicit in the potential objectification and mistreatment of women in our society,” he said in the statement.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the league decided after the head office “heard significant concerns from a broad array of league stakeholders, including fans, partners, and employees.”
However, during a recent taping of his It is What it Is podcast, rap artist Cam’ron said that he isn’t buying that excuse. Cam said that the NBA’s decision was a result of dry snitching.
“You’ve got 41 games at home. Pick another night to bring the kids and leave them home for Magic City Night. I call it dry snitching. Adam Silver may not have been aware of what [Magic City Night] necessarily meant,” he said. “And I’m gonna be honest, I’m not jacking that the employees were mad about it. Maybe the shareholders. I think Adam Silver was made aware of it; he threw some hot sauce on that s**t.
