“Some people aren’t meant to own sh*t,” Lupe said while discussing why he believes ownership can be overrated. The Chicago rapper pushed back against the idea that renters should feel financially or socially inferior simply because they don’t hold the title to a property.
Lupe also questioned what “ownership” really means when major expenses and government requirements continue long after something has been paid off. He pointed to property taxes on homes, along with registration and insurance requirements for vehicles, as examples of costs that never fully disappear.
From his perspective, those ongoing obligations complicate the idea that a person ever completely owns a house or car free and clear.
Rather than treating ownership as the ultimate sign of financial success, Lupe argued that people should make decisions based on what works best for their individual circumstances. His comments add another perspective to the long-running debate over renting versus buying and whether traditional ideas of ownership still make sense for everyone.
