Macklemore is having the biggest week of his life in over a decade. His name has become synonymous with resistance and taking a stand over the genocide happening to the Palestinian people.
The result of him getting ousted from Ed Sheeran’s tour by Robert Kraft and the show promoters has ignited a chain reaction he probably didn’t see coming.
It put both Kraft and Sheeran on the defensive, forcing them to release less than ideal statements. Shortly after, every single one of Sheeran’s opening acts, including his band, left the tour. The acts, Lukas Graham, Phinneas, Aaron Rowe, and Beoga, have all withdrawn, citing their discomfort with playing venues that would silence artists. Additionally, they also wanted to be in solidarity with Macklemore.
Things for Sheeran have gotten so bad, that signs have been posted where you, yes, I mean YOU could open for Ed Sheeran if you send in a YouTube video. Of course, that backfired greatly as well.
Macklemore Shows Up
As all this brewed, Macklemore has decided to use this spotlight for one thing: aid for the Palestinians.
In a statement, he made it clear he wasn’t trying to take attention off of the horrible things happening to them, saying he would donate $1 Million of his tour earnings to the cause. He invited Robert Kraft to match his donation.
“Whatever we disagree about, perhaps we can agree on this: Palestinian lives are worth protecting. A Palestinian life is no less valuable than any other life on this earth. That is what this has always been about. Not me. Not a tour, not the headlines or the controversy. It is about Palestinians right to freedom, dignity and safety in their own homeland. I want to center the parents carrying their children into hospitals without the basic resources to treat them, and the physicians, paramedics, journalists and aid workers who keep going back in. I want to center the organizers and activists who have paid real costs for standing with Palestine. Their risk is of a far different order than mine. Palestinians have lived for decades without basic rights and should not have to wait another day to be free. That is where my focus will remain. I will continue to stand with the Palestinian people and their fight for liberation. When the news cycle moves on, which it will, don’t move with it.”
Kraft responded by saying Ed Sheeran asked him to donate $2 Million to the cause. However, Kraft said he’d consider donating to “the region,” which can equally mean both Palestine and Israel aid efforts.
In a new statement, Macklemore says he will donate $1 million of his net earnings from Ed Sheeran's "LOOP Tour" to six organizations supporting the Palestinian people, and has invited Robert Kraft to match the donation.
