The United States senate voted 87 to 12 to approve the bipartisan criminal justice bill and send it to the House, where it’s expected to pass. Once the bill lands on President Trump’s desk, he will sign the historic piece of legislation into law.
Meek Mill speaks on Instagram about this major step in government saying, “This major!!!!”. “A lot of over sentenced men and women will come home soon!! @vanjones68 ?????????.”
The First Step act aims to significantly reduce the number of people in our nation’s prisons within the next 10 years. It also give judges more discretion when it comes to sentencing offenders for nonviolent crimes, specifically drug offenses. The bill with support from both Republican and Democratic members of Congress will also fortify rehabilitation programs for former prisoners who plan to turn their lives around after they serve their sentence.
This bill could prevent people from facing the injustices Meek Mill feels he faced after being given a two-year prison sentence for violating charges related to drug charges he caught nearly a decade ago. Over the last several months, Meek has done his part to affect change.
Here’s Meek’s reaction to the First Step Act.
