Dr. Michael Eric Dyson went viral in February for scolding Kendrick Lamar over his 2024 Drake diss, Not Like Us. And he says that one of the more prominent people to grill him over his comments was Jay-Z.
Jay-Z Grilled Michael Eric Dyson Over Kendrick Lamar Comments
In a reel posted to his social media account on Thursday (March 5), Dyson says that Hov “vigorously” disagreed with his assessment of the 2024 hit record.
“A very dear and good friend of mine disagrees with me bitterly. Well, I won’t say bitterly, just aggressively and vigorously. His name is Sean Carter, better known as Jay-Z,” he explained, as seen in a clip shared by DJ Akademiks. “He hit me up, and he vigorously disagreed with my particular position. He said it with dignity, he said it with respect, he articulated his idea intelligently.”

During an appearance on the Mohr Stories podcast in February, Dyson weighed in on Kendrick’s Not Like Us. And compared K. Dot questioning Drake’s blackness to President Donald Trump’s profiling of American Immigrants.
“‘You are not like us. You are Somalian, you are Ethiopian, you are Eritrean, you are Mexican, you are whatever, fill in the blank,” he said. “And so to me, that very theme, forget the song, the song is the song, whatever you think about it. But the notion itself is a man distinction, a big distinction, us versus them. And they’re trying to de-Black Drake.”
In the aftermath of the hit record, Drake filed a lawsuit against Universal Music Group over the hit record. Stating that the song defamed him, particularly where Kendrick refers to Drizzy as a “certified pedophile.” Unfortunately for Drake, his defamation lawsuit was dismissed in October 2025. But he and his legal team have already begun the appeals process.
