Nas has revealed that Eminem was once his first choice for a feature on the heartfelt track “Daughters,” but the Detroit rap icon ultimately chose to pass—out of respect and personal boundaries.
In a recent reflection, Nas explained that he sent the song to Eminem hoping for a collaboration that leaned more toward vulnerability than competition. However, Eminem declined the offer, citing how deeply personal the subject matter already was for him.
“Every record I do is not a battle,” Nas shared. “I remember I had sent the song ‘Daughters’ to Eminem, and at the time, you know, he had spent so much time speaking on daughters, he was like, ‘Thank you, but I told my daughter I’m not doing any more songs directly about daughters at the moment because that’s a sensitive issue with all the music I put out.’”
Despite turning the feature down, Eminem expressed appreciation for the record and the approach behind it. According to Nas, Em welcomed the opportunity to hear a song that wasn’t framed as a lyrical showdown.
“He was like, ‘Thank you, ’cause most people wanna do songs where they’re battling me. It was refreshing to get a record where you’re not coming for me,’” Nas added.
The moment highlights the mutual respect between two of hip-hop’s most revered lyricists—and offers a glimpse into how even unfulfilled collaborations can be rooted in understanding, honesty, and artistic integrity.
