Nelly is standing ten toes down on a decision that’s continued to draw heat: performing presidential inauguration of Donald Trump.
While promoting his new reality series We Belong Together with wife Ashanti, Nelly stopped by Ebro in the Morning and addressed the controversial concert. And according to him, it’s never been about politics.
“Where did you get pro-Donald?” Nelly asked the hosts. “What you had was respect for office.” He continued, “It’s great how people spin narratives to things that best fit whatever they’re against… instead of giving a brother the exact fundamental of what he did, what he said.”
Nelly doubled down on his stance after The Shade Room posted a clip of his interview to Instagram. In the same breath, the Diamond-selling rapper turned his attention toward former Vice President Kamala Harris—calling out the irony of her support in the Black community, despite her controversial record as a prosecutor.
“Some of y’all have a problem with [us] because the prosecutor who has probably locked up more Black men that we’ve helped—woman of color with the white husband and white kids—did not win the election,” Nelly wrote online, referencing both his philanthropic work with HBCUs and Harris’ time as California’s top cop.
The Country Grammar rapper seems more concerned with consistency than clout. Whether or not people agree with him, Nelly’s not backing down—and if the comments section is any indication, this debate isn’t cooling off anytime soon.
