Nicki Minaj caught the attention of the hip-hop world after she declared that she was retiring from music amid her beef with Roc Nation. And cited Jay-Z as the reason for her exit.
“Ok, I’m not going to put out the album anymore, she wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, on October 15. “No more music. Hope you’re happy now [JAY-Z]. Bye, Barbz. Love you for life.”
Nicki Minaj Changes Course on Retirement
However, during a recent X Spaces, Nicki walked back her previous statement. Noting that when she does retire, it will be of her own volition. Not because her hand is being forced.
“I am the conductor of this train,” she said. “Okay? When I want it to slow down, I slow it down. When I need it to speed up to give everyone a heart attack, I speed it up. But right before everyone thinks they’re about to go ‘Poof!’, I press the brakes. Why? Well, I don’t explain myself to c****, but I’ll explain myself to you. Why is it because I can?”
Minaj also expressed her excitement about the “next chapter” of her music career. And also noted that she is in the best “musical place” that she has ever been.
“Just know that I’m very happy with you guys and with the next chapter,” she added. “Nothing is going to stop that. We are in the best musical place I’ve ever been in, ever in my life. And just complete musical clarity.”
She also said that the upcoming project feels like an “introduction” to the beginning of her music career.
“I don’t want to say rebirth, but like almost like an introduction to myself when I started,” she stated. “But not talking about the sound, which is normally what people talk about, but the person.”
Minaj’s new album is scheduled to drop on March 27.
