Recent commentary by Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has sparked debate about the city. He downplayed Memphis and suggested that the NBA move the team to the state Capital of Nashville.
“Yeah, random f—ing Tuesday in Milwaukee, staying at the f—ing Hyatt at 41 years old. You think I wanna do that shit? Being in Memphis on a random ass Thursday,” he said, as caught by CBS Sports.
“I’m not like the first guy even to talk about in the NBA,” James added. “Like, we’re all like, ‘You guys have to move.’ Go over to Nashville, you’ve got Vanderbilt over there, you’ve got the f—ing NASCAR, you’ve got a stadium. Don’t they have a hockey team too? They’ve got everything.”
James’ comments sparked a lot of backlash from a bevy of Memphis residents and others with ties to the city. But James says that their anger is misplaced.
“People are ridiculous. They also get mad at my son (Bronny) being on the (Lakers), too. So what are we talking about? People need to figure out other ways to put their energy into other things that are important,” he said, as caught by the New York Times. “Like seriously? I’m not talking about the city, like the people in Memphis. I don’t like staying at the Hyatt Centric. What’s wrong with that? Nothing! What are we talking about? … People need to chill the hell out.”
Fortunately for James, the Lakers are not scheduled to play in Memphis again this season.
