According to Billboard, Carti’s long-awaited third LP, which was finally released on March 14, has debuted at number one on the chart after earning 298,000 equivalent units in its first week.
Still, Carti isn’t convinced that the industry got the full picture. In response to the news, he took to social media to say that MUSIC actually moved 320,000 units in its first week.
Billboard has since explained that the album was “available to purchase only as a digital download” and that CD copies “will be issued in the coming weeks.” That means Carti could see a second wave of sales in the near future, depending on how those versions perform. An early forecast from HITSDailyDouble predicts the album will rack up an additional 120,000-140,000 units in its second week.
Playboi Carti Has Record-Breaking Opening Week
Regardless of the numbers that both parties shared, the rapper has the biggest week for a rap album in 2025 and the largest streaming week for a rap project in two years with MUSIC. It also became the most-streamed album in a single day in 2025 so far on Spotify.
It also boasts the biggest streaming week for any album since Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department last May.
In terms of Carti’s own catalog, MUSIC represents the highest first-week sales of his career and his second chart-topping album following 2020’s Whole Lotta Red, which opened with 100,000 sales.
The Atlanta creative is already promoting his next project on social media amid the success of his latest highly anticipated project. “CONGRATS LETS CONTINUE DIS LIL RUN WE GOT I GOT ANOTHER CLIP READY,” he wrote via his alternate Instagram account.
