One year ago music suffered a major loss in the death of Prince. Prince was a music innovator on so many levels all the way down to the LM-1 Drum Machine he used. Prince’s drum machine programming skills were far ahead of just about any producer you can name in the early 80’s. It’s tough to put a tag or label on the actual genre that an artist like Prince actually is. He was a bit of everything, we just have to consider him a musician. With that being said Prince had a Hip-Hop mentality mixed with a Rock Star mentality.
Aside from various artist sampling his very deep and critically acclaimed catalog Prince was often mingling with the Hip-Hop world. From Kurtis Blow to Q-Tip to Kendrick Lamar. There is that time when Prince gave Kurtis Blow $90,000 to make the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. tribute music video “King Holiday” happen. There is also that time when Prince surprised Q-Tip and the audience and jumped on stage grabbed a guitar and performed “Vivrant Thing” along side of Tip and then walked off stage.
A great man of mystery Prince was but he has always shown love to Hip-Hop and the culture so we have to give it right back.
