On Tuesday (April 28), the New York Times paid homage to the 30 Greatest Living American Songwriters. Jay-Z was among the names that appeared on the unranked list.

Pusha T Pays Homage to Jay-Z & His Greatness

Pusha T, one of Jay-Z’s most frequent collaborators, was interviewed by the outlet as part of the feature. And he talked about the greatness that Hov has exuded throughout his career. Pusha T believes that much of Jay-Z’s success can be attributed to his ability to resonate with an entire generation.

“There haven’t been many people who can speak for a generation, and speak to the mentality of what Black youth was going through, for everyone who indulged in the allure of street culture,” he said as caught by Big_Business on X. He gave us such a tutorial, his whole career, about street life, drug culture, luxury, the pitfalls as well as the floss. And then he took “Allure,” from “The Black Album,” and basically admitted, Man, I fell victim to the game.

Hov has not shied away from his past throughout his career. He’s talked about his past as a drug dealer and how it shaped his music, and that ultimately translated to his success on a business level. And Pusha praised Jay for how he encouraged people to grow from that.

“It is just the best representation of a rap artist speaking to his demographic, which was a lot of the kids exposed to the crack era from every angle,” Pusha added. “Everybody who was playing in that world, you know, we all had moments of clarity. That chorus and bridge really captured the feelings of anyone living that life. And the hook spoke to a level of admission of, like, I know I’m doing wrong. I see clearly. I’m over it. I’m done.”

That resonance has clearly worked out in Hov’s favor. He has become one of the highest-selling rappers of all time.
