R. Kelly is reportedly under investigation after prison officials discovered a retired warden’s phone number inside his North Carolina prison cell.
According to TMZ, the disgraced R&B singer was placed in solitary confinement on Monday (Feb. 16) while authorities conduct a probe into the situation at FCI Butner in Butner, North Carolina. The discovery came after Kelly’s cellmate was caught with a contraband cell phone, prompting officers to search their shared cell.
During the search, officials reportedly found a notebook belonging to Kelly that contained the phone number of a former warden. Kelly’s attorney claims the number was legitimate and connected to a mentorship program Kelly previously participated in while incarcerated. The attorney explained that the warden had given Kelly his phone number in case he needed guidance related to the program before the official retired.
Despite that explanation, prison officials have placed Kelly in a special housing unit as the investigation continues. It remains unclear whether Kelly will face any disciplinary action or additional consequences as a result of the discovery.
Kelly is currently serving a lengthy federal sentence following convictions on racketeering and sex trafficking charges. This latest development adds another layer of scrutiny to his ongoing incarceration.
