R. Kelly Asks Trump to Grant Him Clemency
According to a Wednesday (July 15) report from CBS News, the Chocolate Factory creator has asked United States President Donald Trump to grant him clemency for his child sex abuse conviction.
According to the outlet, the singer’s attorneys filed the motion earlier this year, and it is currently in a “pending” status.
R. Kelly is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with over 75 million records sold worldwide and 40 million in the U.S. He has also won multiple Grammy Awards and dominated charts with hits like “I Believe I Can Fly,” which was also featured in the hit movie Space Jam, starring NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan.
But the Chicago native has failed to stay out of legal trouble. And his past finally caught up with him in September 2021. When the “Chocolate Factory” creator was convicted of nine counts of racketeering. Specifically related to him being the head of a sex trafficking ring involving young children.
As a result, he was sentenced to 31 years in prison. His estimated release date is August 15, 2045, when he will be 78 years old.
Kelly would add himself to a long list of entertainers who have been granted clemency by the president. Lil Wayne, NBA Youngboy, and Kodak Black have also been granted pardons by the president. In addition, Sean “Diddy” Combs has also reached out to the president to be granted clemency.
