Lil Wayne is preparing to release the sixth installment of his Tha Carter series. So we took a look at the best song from each album.
Go DJ (Lil Wayne The Carter, 2004)
The Carter was essentially Lil Wayne’s introduction to the rap industry. Despite dropping three projects before The Carter, this was the album that put people on notice about DJ. One song from that project stuck out in particular, Go DJ. He tapped fellow New Orleans DJ Mannie Fresh for the first song where he proclaims himself “the hottest n***a under the sun. “
Hustler Musik (The Carter II, 2005)
After an impressive debut studio album, the pressure was on Weezy to deliver a sophomore project that was equally as successful. Hustler Musik was the first single off of the Carter II. The track was a surprise for many fans as Wayne anchored away from his usually fast-paced rhymes about money and women and took a more somber tone. Using the art of storytelling to paint a picture of his memories of his upbringing in New Orleans, Louisiana.
A Milli (The Carter III, 2008)
The Carter III was a canon moment in Lil Wayne’s career. This studio album put validity to the claim that Lil Wayne was indeed the best rapper alive. Despite it being a golden age in hip-hop where artists such as Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Eminem were constantly putting out hits. “A Milli” was the best song from that album. It was also a culture shift. The A Milli beat became world-renowned. So much that artists began using the beat as their own to showcase their lyrical skills.
It’s Good Featuring Drake & Jadakiss (The Carter IV, 2011)
Wayne solidified himself as the best rapper in the world following the release of Carter III. And he wanted to keep his place on the throne. To stay the king, you have to engage in battle. And for a brief moment and time, he and Jay-Z battled for the top spot. Wayne fired back at Hov on this song. After the Brooklyn artist aimed Lil Wayne on his song H.A.M. off his 2011 Watch The Throne project with Kanye West. In the song, Hov clowns Weezy for being a product of nepotism. Accusing him of having “baby money” and noting that at the time he did not even make more money than Beyonce. Wayne hit back on It’s Good, threatening to kidnap Beyonce for ransom money.
Mona Lisa Featuring Kendrick Lamar (Carter V, 2018)
Prior to his beef with Drake and issues over the Super Bowl Halftime Show, Kendrick Lamar and Lil Wayne were featured on a song. The two lyricists linked up on Mona Lisa on Weezy’s Carter V. The Weezy and Dot put on a storytelling clinic on this critically acclaimed track.
