Rich Homie Quan’s Father Opens Up About His and Young Thug’s fallout

At one point, Rich Homie Quan and Young Thug were inseparable. As the dynamic duo behind Rich Gang’s most electric moments in the mid-2010s, the two Atlanta rappers seemed poised to dominate the next decade of hip hop. But behind the scenes, their bond was unraveling — and for Rich Homie Quan, the fallout hit harder than many fans ever knew.

In a recent appearance on the It’s Up There podcast, Rich Homie Quan’s father, Corey Lamar, opened up about the emotional weight his son carried after things went south with Thug.

“It affected Quan a lot,” Corey admitted. “I can only speak on Quan. Quan wouldn’t talk to me about it, but I know my son. It had a profound effect on his everyday life. I know it did.”

According to Corey, the damage wasn’t just personal — it was professional too. He compared his son’s experience in the music industry to Colin Kaepernick’s in the NFL, implying that Quan was quietly blackballed after distancing himself from Thug and the Rich Gang movement.

While speculation around their split has followed both rappers for years, Young Thug finally offered his perspective during an interview with GQ in April 2024. In typical Thugger fashion, he kept it cool, chalking the separation up to growth and evolution.

“I think we just grew and became our own bosses and men,” Thug said. “We didn’t want to keep doing the Rich Gang albums. We were getting bigger, so it’s like, I wanted to do my own shit.”

Though he said he didn’t have an issue continuing the collaboration, Thug acknowledged that others might not have been on the same page. There were no shots fired — just a matter-of-fact take on drifting apart.

Still, there were signs of healing before tragedy struck. In one of his final interviews before his untimely death, Rich Homie Quan appeared open to reconnecting with Thugger.

“We do have a lot of unreleased music,” Quan said. “But who knows what the future holds? First and foremost, it’s free Thugger. I’m willing to have a conversation, and it’ll start from there.”

Their story is a reminder of how deep hip hop bonds can run — and how painful it is when those bonds break. While fans never got the Rich Gang reunion they hoped for, both artists left a legacy of music that defined a moment and shaped Atlanta’s sound for years to come.
