Sean Paul is putting his money — and his platform — behind his home island in a major way.
The dancehall legend took to Instagram on Oct. 30 to launch a relief initiative for Jamaicans hit hard by Hurricane Melissa, the historic Category 5 storm that tore through the Caribbean earlier this week. Through the Sean Paul Foundation, he’s promising to match public donations dollar for dollar, up to $50,000.
“Right now, my island of Jamaica is going through a really tough time,” he said in a video message. “Hurricane Melissa has caused serious damage, and many of our brothers and sisters are struggling — families displaced, homes destroyed, and communities in need of help.”
Sean Paul partnered with Food For The Poor Jamaica to ensure funds go directly to residents dealing with the aftermath — from emergency supplies and clean water to rebuilding efforts.
The storm hit Jamaica on Oct. 28 with 185 mph winds and was immediately labeled “catastrophic” by the World Meteorological Organization. Widespread destruction, mass power outages, and deadly flooding followed. Government officials confirmed multiple fatalities across the island, while nearly 140,000 people were completely cut off in the storm’s path. Melissa has caused at least 30 deaths across the Caribbean so far, with full damage assessments still underway.
Sean Paul is calling on fans worldwide to step up:
“I’m asking all my fans, friends, and supporters, if you can, please give what you can. Every donation counts, no matter how small. And to show how much this means to me, I’ll be matching every dollar raised, up to fifty thousand dollars. Together, we can double the impact.”
Donations can be made through the Sean Paul Foundation’s official link with Food For The Poor Jamaica.
“Let’s stand strong for Jamaica — one love, one family, one nation,” he wrote. “Big up, and thank you for your support.”
