When tennis legend Serena Williams left the court at the U.S. Open in September 2022, it was widely believed to have been her last match. But with the love that she has for the sport, she couldn’t stay away from the game for too long.
Serena Williams Announces Return to Tennis
On Monday (June 1), Williams announced that she would be returning to the court. The tennis superstar has accepted an invitation to play in the HSBC Championship Games at Queen’s Club in London. However, she won’t be participating in any singles action, as she is set to compete in the doubles tournament. She believes the Queens club is the “perfect place” to resume her tennis career.
“Queen’s Club feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter,” Williams said in a release on Monday (via ESPN). “Grass has given me some of the most meaningful moments of my career, so I’m excited to be back competing on one of the sport’s most iconic stages.”
The World Tennis Association (WTA) confirmed Williams’ return at the tournament in a statement on Monday. The association’s chair, Valerie Camillo, called Williams’ return an “expression of her passion for competition.”
“Serena is one of the greatest athletes of all time, with a legacy that extends far beyond the court. Her return is an expression of her passion for competition, and I cannot wait to see her face a new generation of top players,” Camillo said.
“Serena is not just a great champion. She’s a successful entrepreneur, a powerful advocate for the issues that matter — and one of the most iconic women in the world. We are thrilled to welcome her back to the WTA Tour at this hugely exciting moment for women’s tennis.”
The tournament will run from June 8 to June 21. So it should be exciting to see Serena return to her element.
