BET announced the nominations for their 2018 Awards Ceremony. Nominated in the Best Gospel/Inspirational Category is Hip Hop Icon Snoop Dogg, alongside B.Slade – who are up for ‘Words Are Few‘ (taken from Snoop’s Gospel Album “Bible Of Love’). Also up in the Gospel Field is Ledisi & Kirk Franklin, Marvin Sapp, Lecrae & Tori Kelly, and Tasha Cobbs-Leonard & Nicki Minaj (for their collaboration on Leonard’s “Heart.Passion.Pursuit.”, ‘I’m Getting Ready‘).
This choice of nominees feed into previous discussions had within the Gospel Music Community regarding Gospel Artists being snubbed by Award Shows, in favor of more Mainstream Acts. Back in 2004, KanyeWest’s “College Dropout” was nominated for “Rap/Hip-Hop CD of the Year” at the Stellar Gospel Music Awards. However, after major backlash from the Christian Community, the decision of inclusion was later rescinded by the Stellars’ Committee.
