Stephen A. Smith is shutting down rumors that ESPN pushed him out of NBA Countdown. After several outlets claimed he was removed from the show, Smith clarified that the reports are flat-out false.

According to Smith, the decision not to appear on NBA Countdown moving forward was part of his own negotiations during his new contract discussions with ESPN. He explained that he personally arranged to step away from the hosting duties—not because he was fired or sidelined, but because he no longer wanted to be required to anchor the program.

Smith emphasized that the move was strategic and intentional, allowing him to focus on other responsibilities within the network, including First Take, where he remains the face of the franchise.

With speculation now put to rest, Smith made it clear: his departure from NBA Countdown wasn’t a demotion—it was his call.
