SZA made sure to set the record straight when rumors circulated Coachella had paid her to serve as a backup headliner for Justin Bieber. The TDE rapper/singer took to Instagram to clear up any confusion over the rumors.
What Did SZA Say About The Allegations?
The rumor circulated due to Bieber’s well-documented recent health scares. Fans began to speculate on who Coachella would have fill in. SZA came up several times, with some fans even claiming the Grammy-winning artist had already received a 100K+ advance payment. The rumors became so widespread, that music meme accounts began to report it.
Instagram music account Blind Items, co posted with Music Life, claimed that SZA had allegedly been paid six figures to stay Coachella-ready in case Bieber dropped out.
The superstar got word of the post and commented, addressing the rumors.
“LMAO, who made this up?” SZA posted. “I’ve seen this four times now. “I’m in New York. No one paid me a dime. Wishing everyone the best.”
Coachella did not need to use a backup, as Bieber’s performance went on as scheduled. However, his set drew a divisive reaction when he forwent the flashy pop star theatrics for a stripped down, YouTube-centric performance art.
What Is TDE Up To?
SZA’s record label, TDE, has been busy at work rolling out Isaiah Rashad’s upcoming album It’s Been Awful. The album comes five years after his most recent work, 2021’s The House Is Burning.
The lead single, “Same S***,” dropped last week, teasing fans about Rashad’s new direction.
The full album comes out May 1st.
