The SOS singer revealed that Beyoncé never asked for compensation when SZA interpolated one of her songs on her SOS album.
The title track of SZA’s 2022 album LP includes a line inspired by Beyoncé’s 2006 Dreamgirls ballad, “Listen.” SZA sings, “And I cried and cried / Said what’s on my mind,” echoing Beyoncé’s original lyric: “And I’ve tried and tried / To say what’s on my mind.”
This revelation surfaced on April 28 in the comments of an Instagram reel posted by influencer Zuhaila Jama. The video joked about Beyoncé’s lengthy songwriting credits, suggesting she generously credits nearly everyone involved in her creative process. SZA chimed in with a gem of her own, writing, “I literally owe her half my publishing off interpolation alone on SOS and she never pressed me lmao a generous QUEEN.”
It’s not the first time SZA has praised the icon. After sweeping three wins at the 2024 Grammys, SZA posted a bouquet and note she received from Beyoncé herself. The handwritten message read:
“I’m so happy for you, beautiful! Watching you grow and win is an honor. Sending huge congrats, talented queen. All my love and respect, B.”
SZA shared the love right back on her Instagram Stories, writing, “Thank you for seeing me before anyone else did. For making me feel valuable when I felt small. For your light, kindness, and belief in me. May God continue to bless and protect you, queen.”
Despite their mutual admiration, SZA later admitted she was too nervous to even say hi when they crossed paths.
“I can’t speak unless she wants to speak, in my brain, because I don’t want to bother her. She looked so peaceful and beautiful,” she said at the time. “I just admire her. She’s a masterclass on poise, grace, artistry, beauty and kindness.”
