Just days after suggesting he would consider making music with R. Kelly, legendary producer Teddy Riley has reversed his stance following public backlash.
In a new statement addressing comments made during a Los Angeles Times interview, Riley clarified that the idea of working with Kelly was simply a creative thought mentioned in passing and confirmed that no collaboration will move forward.
“I want to address the Los Angeles Times interview directly,” Riley wrote. “As a producer, I’ve always been excited about the possibilities of music and creative collaboration. That excitement has defined my career. But I also understand that words carry weight, and I never want my passion for music to overshadow the very real pain that many people have experienced.”
Riley went on to apologize to anyone hurt by his remarks, emphasizing that he takes seriously the impact abuse and misconduct have had on survivors and their families.
“If my comments caused hurt, I sincerely apologize. That was never my intention,” he added. “Loving music and recognizing its cultural impact does not mean condoning harmful behavior, and I want to be clear about that.”
The producer also reiterated that the potential collaboration is not happening and reaffirmed his commitment to integrity and accountability as he continues promoting his memoir and focusing on his legacy.
Riley’s follow-up statement appears aimed at drawing a clear line between artistic admiration and personal responsibility, as he seeks to move forward amid the controversy.
