Following the announcement that Travis Scott will perform at the 2019 Super Bowl halftime show, more details have come to light.
On Sunday (Jan. 13), Travis Scott released a statement announcing that he has partnered with the NFL to donate $500,000 to the Dream Corps charity, which have been at the forefront of social justice issues. The non-profit organization, founded by Van Jones in 2014, will work with the NFL to bring additional initiatives to the communities they serve. The donation follows the NFL announcement of their “Inspire Change” program which will produce programs for criminal justice reform and more.
According to Dream Corps, they find aspiring leaders who have the courage and determination to tackle America’s toughest challenges and connect them to world-class partners, smart digital tools and national media platforms to help them succeed.
“I back anyone who takes a stand for what they believe in,” Travis Scott said in a statement. “I know being an artist that it’s in my power to inspire. So before confirming the Super Bowl Halftime performance, I made sure to partner with the NFL on this important donation.”
“I am proud to support Dream Corps and the work they do that will hopefully inspire and promote change,” he concluded.
Rev. Al Sharpton is among many who have spoken out against Scott performing at the 2019 Super Bowl event. “You can’t tell people to stand for those who take a knee and don’t go to the game, then say but somebody should perform there and entertain,” he said. “I think you can’t have it both ways. You can’t help people market something and then turn around and say you agree with what people are protesting.”
Several artists, including Jay-Z, have also said that Scott should turn down the offer to perform.
Travis Scott and Outkast member Big Boi have been tapped to perform at the 2019 Super Bowl halftime show, which takes place on Feb. 3 at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
