President Donald Trump is reportedly weighing the possibility of commuting Sean “Diddy” Combs’ 50-month prison sentence, TMZ reported Monday (Oct. 20). The sentence stems from two prostitution-related charges Diddy was convicted of earlier this month. According to the outlet, some White House staffers are not on board with the idea.
Back in August, after Diddy’s conviction, Trump hinted at potentially issuing a pardon during an interview with Newsmax’s Rob Finnerty. “Well, he was essentially, sort of, half-innocent. I don’t know what they do that he’s still in jail… He was celebrating a victory, but I guess it wasn’t as good a victory,” Trump said at the time.
Trump also reflected on his complicated personal history with Diddy. “I was very friendly with him, got along with him great, seemed like a nice guy, didn’t know him well. But when I ran for office he was very hostile… It makes it more difficult to do,” he said.
Diddy’s legal team has reportedly reached out directly. Attorney Nicole Westmoreland told CNN on August 5, “It’s my understanding that we’ve reached out and had conversations in reference to a pardon.”
The White House has since pushed back on reports that a commutation is imminent, noting that the president ultimately decides on all pardons and commutations. Still, Trump himself confirmed earlier this month that Diddy had requested one. “A lot of people have asked me for pardons. I call him Puff Daddy, [he] has asked me for a pardon,” Trump told reporters.
Just last week, Trump commuted the sentence of former New York Representative George Santos, who was serving over seven years for fraud and identity theft. So, could Diddy be next? Only time will tell.
