In an era where a microphone and a Wi-Fi signal can turn anyone into a pundit, Tyler, the Creator remains firmly unimpressed. The rapper recently sat down with The Cut to discuss his latest Converse collaboration, but the conversation took a detour when he was asked about the podcast wave he’s long criticized.
“I think we give a lot of people who aren’t smart and just want attention platforms to be loud and incorrect, and other stupid people follow them,” Tyler said. “Where are the people with skills? We need electricians, we need more drummers, painters, teachers. Everybody with a mic is crazy. I just think that sh*t is gross.”
While he’s mostly written podcasts off as a symptom of cultural noise, Tyler did make a small exception: “Deante Kyle (Grits & Eggs Podcast) is sick, and The Cutting Room Floor is sick. Those are two podcasts that are in the right direction.”
The CHROMOKOPIA artist’s podcast aversion isn’t new. In a 2024 interview with Billboard, he floated a dystopian daydream: “If I [were] president, the first thing I would do is take podcast mics away from n—as.” He didn’t mince words then either, slamming the glut of unexamined opinions online: “Expound on that f—king thought, b—ch.”
True to form, Tyler, the Creator’s critique isn’t about being contrarian for its own sake. It’s about depth—or the lack thereof. In his world, creative rigor and craftsmanship still matter more than virality. And for now, that means most podcasts don’t make the cut.
