YNW Melly is set to face trial in his witness tampering case in just a few weeks, as the long-running legal saga surrounding the Florida rapper continues.
On Monday (Jan. 5), Melly appeared in Broward County Court for a motion hearing related to the upcoming trial. According to NBC 6 South Florida, both the prosecution and defense filed motions outlining what evidence should be considered admissible when the witness tampering case goes before a jury.
Melly has been incarcerated since 2019 while fighting a high-profile double-murder case. The witness tampering charges were added in 2023 after his initial murder trial ended in a mistrial. The witness tampering trial is currently scheduled to begin on Jan. 21, while the double-murder retrial has been delayed multiple times and is now set for 2027.
The rapper is accused of killing his childhood friends Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas and Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams in October 2018, then staging the scene to appear as a drive-by shooting. Prosecutors allege that in October 2023, Melly attempted to interfere with the judicial process by discouraging his ex-girlfriend, Mariah Hamilton, and her mother, Felicia Holmes, from testifying during the first trial.
As jury selection approaches, the outcome of the witness tampering case could have major implications for Melly’s ongoing legal battles and his future moving forward.
