One of the men convicted in the murder of Jam Master Jay has just had his conviction overturned.
On Friday (Dec. 19), U.S. District Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall granted an acquittal for Karl Jordan Jr., according to the New York Daily News. The judge ruled that prosecutors failed to present sufficient evidence showing that Jordan Jr.—who was Jam Master Jay’s godson—had a clear motive to kill the legendary Run-DMC member.
Jordan Jr. was one of two men previously found guilty in the high-profile case. His alleged accomplice, Ronald Washington, was denied a similar request for acquittal and remains convicted. Last February, both men were found guilty on all counts, including murder while engaged in narcotics trafficking and firearm-related murder.
Washington now faces a minimum of 20 years in prison, with a potential life sentence still on the table. He has not yet been sentenced.
Jam Master Jay was fatally shot inside his recording studio in Queens on Oct. 30, 2002, a killing that stunned the Hip-Hop community and remained unsolved for nearly two decades before arrests were made.
