New England Patriots star Stefon Diggs has found himself on the hot seat a mere weeks before the NFL Playoffs.

Stefon Diggs Charged With Assault and Strangulation

The star wide receiver appeared in court via telephone on Tuesday (December 30) to respond to an assault allegation. He is being accused of strangulation and assault stemming from an incident that occurred on December 2nd.

The entire debacle couldn’t have come at a worse time for Diggs. He and the Patriots currently sit atop the AFC East and look primed for a deep playoff run. And as one of the Patriots’ premier receivers, he will be an integral part of them reaching the big game. And if he were to be suspended for the infraction, it would severely jeopardize their title hopes.

Following his court appearance, the Patriots released a statement. Noting that they are aware of the situation. They also say that Diggs has “categorically denied” the accusations made against him.

“The New England Patriots are aware of the accusations that have been made regarding Stefon Diggs. Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations. We support Stefon,” the Patriots said in a statement. “We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary. Out of respect for all parties involved, and given that this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time.”

However, despite the Patriots’ apparent support, Diggs is still scheduled to be arraigned on January 23, just two days before the AFC Championship Game. A matchup that Diggs and the Patriots hope to be involved in. It should also be noted that New England doesn’t have the final say when it comes to Diggs’ availability. The NFL could decide to suspend him for the playoffs if the punishment fits the crime.
