After Jim Jones estranged himself from Dipset, he maintained his relevancy by hopping on other rappers’ beats and remixing them. One of his most notable remixes is his Day N Nite Freestyle, which originally belonged to rapper Kid Cudi.

Jim Jones Credits Himself With Kid Cudi’s Success

During a recent appearance on the NoRapCap Podcast, Jones claimed that even though the song and beat originally belonged to Cudi, he was the reason that the song and eventually Cudi blew up.

“That’s how ya’ll know Kid Cudi,” Jones started. “You all would have never known Kid Cudi if I hadn’t remixed that record in New York City. I made it the biggest record in New York City. It wasn’t Kid Cudi. Ya’ll didn’t know who Kid Cudi was.”

From there, Jones explained that Cudi’s video directors reached out to him because they wanted to shoot a video. When the rap star asked to see some of their previous work, they showed them the visuals for Day N Nite. And he liked the song.

“Kid Cudi came about because he had video directors, and they wanted to shoot a video for me. So I asked them to show me the video they did before. So they showed me this kid on top of a roof with a record called Day & Night. He worked in a store under the label. He was a nobody,” Jones continued.

“So I said, ‘I like the record. Get me the beat of the record I want to do a remix. If ya’ll give me the beat of the record, I want ya’ll to shoot my video.’ These kids were trying to shoot a video for free for me.”

Jones went on to say that after he recorded the freestyle and shot the video, his remix to the song ended up becoming “the biggest record in New York City” and that is how Kid Cudi ended up getting signed.

“So I got the beat, I shot the video to the beat, I never even put the shit out. They put the s**t on YouTube, they ripped it off of YouTube, and it became the biggest record in New York City. And that’s how Kid Cudi became an artist. They ended up giving him a deal off of Jim Jones back. If I’m lying, I’m flying,” Jones concluded.

At the time of writing, Kid Cudi has not responded to Jones’ comments.
