J. Cole recently dropped his seventh studio album, The Fall Off. And now that Cole has released one of the most highly anticipated projects of the year, fans are wondering what he has in store next.
In a lot of ways, The Fall Off has felt like Cole’s farewell to the rap industry. But the rap star also has his own record label called Dreamville. The label is home to several talented artists such as JID, Bas, and Cozz. And with Cole potentially transitioning out of the booth, it has left many wondering what the future holds for Dreamville.
J. Cole Sounds Off About The Future of Dreamville
Cole hosted an AMA on social media on Monday (February 9) and was asked about the future of the label. In his response, Cole sounded unsure of what that looks like for Dreamville. But one thing that he is certain of is that he will not be signing any new artists to the label.
“We don’t have the emotional bandwidth for signing more artists with that approach,” he said. “But maybe there is another approach that we can figure out in the future where we can still provide value to artists and to the world under the Dreamville flag. We’re just not there right now.”
A fan asked Cole if Dreamville will continue after he retires, and if he wants to expand the label:

“i wrestle with that. me and ib. Dreamville felt more like a family than it was a label. How I care about all the artists on a personal level it's like a emotional commitment.… pic.twitter.com/kaLU8wd9Gy
Cole explained that the reason he isn’t taking on any new artists is that he feels an emotional connection to his artists. And that his care for the label members goes beyond what they produce when they are in the studio.
“Dreamville felt more like a family than it was a label. How I care about all the artists on a personal level is like an emotional commitment,” he said. “Even if I don’t speak to the artists for a while, I’m at peace when I know they’re in a good place, and I’m worrying about them if I feel otherwise.”
