Florida rap artist Gunplay was one of the original members of Rick Ross’s Maybach Music Group label. However, in an explosive new interview with M3S3 TV, the rapper claims that a lack of promotion from the label ultimately sabotaged his career.
Gunplay Blasts Rick Ross in Explosive New Interview
Under Ross, one of the fastest-rising artists in the early 2000s, Gunplay quickly gained notoriety in the music industry. Songs like Rollin’, Bible on The Dash, and Drop The Tint had people who thought he could be the next big artist out of Miami. But he says the lack of promotion stalled his career.
“Everybody was a group effort,” Gunplay said (via AllHipHop). “But when it was Gunplay’s turn, it was crickets.”
MMG really took off during the blog era. The signings of Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill and DC native Wale were a big reason for that. Songs like Meek’s Dreams and Nightmare and Wale’s Lotus Flower Bomb saw major success on the charts.
Gunplay insists that he has the same type of hit records, just like Wale and Meek did. But without a budget or an active team, his hands were pretty much tied.
“I got hit records. Nobody’s giving me a budget. Nobody’s doing nothing,” he said. “So what you want me to f**king do?”
In addition, Gunplay says that the label forced him to sell his publishing for $50,000. And after the sale was made, he didn’t even get all of his money upfront. He only received $25,000.
As for Gunplay and Ross’s current relationship, he says that the two of them no longer speak. He also says that how Ross handled his music career felt like a “slap in the face.”
“If you f**k with Ross, you f**k with Gunplay—that’s how it was,” he said. “But when it came time for me to get the push, it just felt like a slap in the face.”
