Jay-Z recently sat down with GQ for one of the candid interviews that he has done in recent memory. And one of the topics that came up was the topic of rap beef. And the Brooklyn native made the point that stan culture has taken the enjoyment out of rap beef. Because fans tend to take things “too far”. However, rapper-turned-podcaster Joe Budden has taken issue with his stance.
Joe Budden Hits Back Against Jay-Z’s Stance on Rap Beef
During a recent episode of Budden’s podcast, he noted that he agreed that fans can often push the envelope. But argued that some of the accountability still has to be put onto the artist.
“Fan bases take it too far. I would agree with that. You would hope people don’t bring up kids and wanna destroy your personal life. All of that’s fine,” Budden said. “But, on the accountability tip, if you go out there and beg a n***a to start with you. If you go out there and insist that we have this dance, because we’ve been the best for too long, just me and you for 10 years, then you gotta be willing to take all that comes with. That’s part of the battle. Part of the battle is risk assessment.”

Budden also questioned HOV’s stance on the negativity surrounding rap feuds. And if he feels the same way about drill music.
“I don’t wanna be in a hip-hop where that tango doesn’t get to exist,” he continued. “Now, all of these talking points– I agree with everything he said if we switch the conversation to drill, because then, it’s not worth it to me. But, he didn’t. He wasn’t having a drill conversation… When hip-hop was getting scary evil, it wasn’t ‘battles need to stop.’ It wasn’t all of that.”
