Last week, Coachella continued asserting itself as one of the premier music festivals in the United, grabbing headlines across music. However, you may not have seen it as the festival has implemented an aggressive takedown of live performances. While copyright strikes against fans is nothing new, the festival allegedly is restricting the artists reposting clips from their set.
What Is Going On With Coachella’s Copyright Strikes
Over the weekend, Coachella featured several notable moments including Justin Bieber’s YouTube-centric stripped down performance, David Byrne’s esoteric expression of art, and Offset returning to the stage days following getting shot. But the most buzzed about aspect on social media is what we haven’t seen, fan clips from the festival.
Popular X account Music Struggles highlighted examples of the epidemic.
“Coachella hate the artists they stage and anyone who might want to discover new music,” Music Struggles posted.
The post featured multiple screenshots of fans posting clips from the festival that became unviewable due to the media getting disabled in response to a report by the copyright owner. Coachella owns copyright due to the clips coming from their live stream or in person at their festival.
However, it seems Coachella has taken it a step further.
UK rapper Little Simz posted a clip performing her upcoming single with JT “Game On” on X, but got struck down by a copyright claim from what allegedly is Coachella themselves. It’s important to note though Simz was embedding a clip from fan account JT Supremacy, who originally posted the video.
Coachella also appears to have removed a clip where Sabrina Carpenter allegedly criticized a fan for expressing Arabic pride. She later apologized for the incident and clarified she didn’t know what it was and has now learned.
Streamer Neon also caused controversy when he refused to end his stream while music from the festival played in the background.

How Have Fans Reacted To The Copyright Strikes?
Many fans expressed confusion and anguish over the policy.
“My account got locked bc of copyright …. wtf Coachella let us praise our goddamn faves in peace!!!!,” said one user. “Hey everyone, just want to let you guys know we had to remove our Bini Coachella reaction from Patreon due to copyright issues! Sorry guys!,” said another user. “i think i need to delete some Coachella posts because of copyright? how do i do that?,” said another user.
Other users made jokes out of the event.
“it was the day after Coachella, and all through the (timeline), not a video wasn’t copyright stricken, not even a soundbyte,” said one user. “Coachella copyright striking every single piece of media gah damn,” another user said.
No artists have addressed fans concerns about the copyright strikes.
