Pras’ legal saga is finally coming to a conclusion, barring an appeal. On Thursday (May 1st), the Fugees rapper begins his 14 year prison sentence for money laundering, fraud, and other charges.
What Do We Know About Pras’ Circumstances
Pras is complying with law enforcement after a 2023 conviction for defrauding U.S. financial institutions and laundering millions of dollars into the United States as part of an international security scheme.
His team is appealing the conviction, with his spokesperson Eric Dumas saying they’ll continue to fight fo justice.
“Today is a painful day for Pras, for his family, and for everyone who believes in a fair system of justice,” Dumas said. “Pras honors the legal process as he reports to begin his sentence. The FARA-related charges that led to his conviction are being vigorously contested on appeal. His legal team believes the record will show that his rights were violated and the truth was obscured. This chapter is difficult but it is not his final one.”
Pras will serve his sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Safford, Arizona.

What Else Do We Know About The Case?
Federal prosecutors indicted Michel in 2019, accusing him of making illegal contributions to President Obama’s 2012 presidential campaign. They added more charges after, including bank fraud, witness tampering, and acting as an unregistered agent of the People’s Republic of China.
According to Rolling Stone, the charges came due to Michel’s association with a Malaysian financier. The financier was accused of stealing $4.5 billion from a state fund. The DOJ claims Michel tried to influence the Trump administration to stop investigating the financier, using money to do so.
Pras recently dropped a lawsuit against former groupmate Lauryn Hill. He reportedly attended Kanye West’s LA show, singing along to Hill’s performance in a suite with Erykah Badu and Dave Chapelle.
