The Drake Iceman rollout has been littered with controversy, especially involving compeitition with the late King of Pop. After seemingly clearing a longstanding Billboard record held by Michael Jackson, fans are arguing that he isn’t close.
What Record Are Fans Contesting Against Drake
The controversy began shortly after Drake posted a picture of him celebrating seemingly breaking Michael Jackson’s record for most No. 1 hit singles on Billboard, after Iceman’s “Janice STFU,” debuted in that spot. The single rose the OVO boss’ No.1 single count to 14, which officially broke Jackson’s record.
However, many fans argued MJ got this record as a solo artist, whereas Drake only has six No.1 records without a feature. Fans also pointed to the Jackson 5’s four No.1 hits, which would actually give Jackson seventeen No.1 singles.
As the lead artist, with and without features, Drake has eleven No.1 hit singles. Songs such as Rihanna’s “What’s My Name,” “Work,” and Future and Tems’ “Wait 4 U,” are features by Drizzy and not his actual songs.
Several fans were quick to point out the issues in logic of crowning Drake over MJ.
“This is like when Bam Adebayo beat Kobe’s 81 point game record, it didn’t carry any weight,” one user posted.
“Let’s not compare artist who came after YouTube to Michael Jackson, another user posted. “Those are water numbers backed by algorithms and forceful recommendations.”
One user even went to the extremes, photoshopping a community note on Pop Crave’s post about Drizzy surpassing Jackson.
“This is factually incorrect,” the photoshop read. “Drake had only 6 number 1 hits as a solo artist. The other 8 are either Drake as a lead artist featuring others, or a guest artist on someone else’s song. All 13 of Michael Jackson’s are solo, and if you count the Jackson 5, add 4 more.”
holy community note, wait so were we hoodwinked this whole time? pic.twitter.com/ZYuHVtrkYQ
