Michael Jackson has taken over charts and box offices even in the afterlife. The late popstar has achieved a rare feat that only six other artists have reached.
What Achievement Has Michael Jackson Accomplished?
While his biopic, Michael, has been breaking records weekly, Jackson’s music has also seen an uptick. The boost from the film has been so big that MJ’s classic “Billie Jean” is currently number one globally. His biopic also is leading the box office despite mixed reviews.
This puts Jackson in an exclusive club of artists who transcended sound and cinema, having the number one song and movie simultaneously.
Some fans may be surprised that Jackson hadn’t already done this, considering the success of his 1988 film Moonwalker. But crucially, while the film went to theatres in Australia, Europe, and South America, it did not get a theatrical release. However, it sold 800,000 copies on VHS.
Due to Micheal‘s succes, Jackson becomes the 7th music artist to have both a number one film and song at the same time. Other artists who’ve achieved this are Eminem, Beyonce, Harry Styles, Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez. But the biggest one happens to be Jackson’s arch rival Prince, when Purple Rain the film, and When Doves Cry both sat at number one. But Prince still has one achievement over MJ that likely won’t happen due to Drake’s Iceman set to top the charts. Prince is the only music artist to have the number one song, album and film, simultaneously.
Michael Jackson simultaneously holds the #1 song and movie globally.

How Well Is ‘Michael’ Doing At The Box Office?
Currently, Michael has already shattered the box office record for music biopics, leaving Bohemian Rhapsody’s opening weekend record in the dust. Currently, it’s up to over $700 Million at the box office globally, closing in on the current highest grossing musical biopic in history, Bohemian Rhapsody at $910 Million.
So far, it’s on pace to get past Bohemian Rhapsody, but the real competition is now Oppenheimer, the current highest grossing biopic at $945 Million.
