The hip-hop community is mourning the loss of one of its biggest pioneers. Legendary DJ Bigga Rankin passed away on Monday (July 20) at the age of 56.
Bigga Rankin was regarded as one of the Godfathers of Southern Hip-Hop. He helped jumpstart the careers of several down south rap stars. Such as Rick Ross and T.I. He also served as an A&R exec at Think It’s a Game Records and was Vice President of American hip-hop and crunk collective, the Hittmenn DJs.
Rick Ross Pays Tribute to Bigga Rankin
Following the announcement of Bigga Rankin’s passing, Rick Ross paid tribute to the “legendary” hip-hop figure.
“We lost a legendary figure in Florida today. Bigga Rankin had an amazing spirit, and he embraced me from day one. That’s the kind of love and loyalty you never forget,” the rap star wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday.
Ross also went on to add that even though Bigga Rankin is no longer physically present, his spiritual presence will not waver. Rozay saluted his impact and legacy, which the rap star says will live on “forever.”
“My dawg has moved on, but his legacy, his voice, and the impact he made on this culture, especially Southern hip-hop, will live forever,” Ross added. “Prayers up for his family and everyone who loved him. Rest in Power, Bigga Rankin”

No details on a cause of death for Bigga Rankin have been released. However, in recent years he had detailed struggles with his health stemming from COVID-19.
