Every once in awhile, the legend Rakim pops back up and lends a verse to other greats in Hip Hop. However, on the precipice of his new collab album with Kurupt and Masta Killa, Rakim is coming out the studio alone on his new track “A Different Kind.”
Rakim Drops New Music
One of the true godfathers of Hip Hop, Rakim has been busy recently. In 2025, inspired by the New York Knicks recent playoff success (prior to their championship run) he combined with Kurupt, Killa, and Busta Rhymes for “Thank You New York Knicks,” an ode to the franchise he loves.
After that, he did collabs with Marco Polo, Lazarus, Hus KingPin, Mic King, and others between the end of 2025 and 2026.
Now, with his new collab album on the horizon, he’s dropped his first new solo joint since his bonus track on the Judas & The Black Messiah soundtrack.
Outside of movie tracks, the last time Rakim dropped a full new song by himself was in 2013 with his The Cellar EP. He also produced a project in 2024 called “G.O.D.’s Network – Reb7rth,” which showed off the godfather’s beat making skills.
“A Different Kind” sees the MC calling out trend chasers and emphasizing the importance of real raps in an AI world.

How Did Social Media React To The Song?
Reactions to the song have leaned positively, with many excited to hear the legend rhyme again.
“YNs get upppp OGs here to save the game. Flow effortless, straight butter,” one user posted.
“Sheesh! Fr I need to see this written down. So many jewels in such a dense space. Him and Inspectah Deck gotta read like scrolls to get everything,” another user posted.

Their collab album, The Godbody, is expected to drop September 18th.
