The UK is mourning a mainstay in 00s and 2010s rap as Sway DaSafo died suddenly today (September 17th).
The news began circulating when car customization company Kream Developments reflected on their relationship with the North London rapper.
“Devastated to hear the sad news today, the passing of a personal friend, a true legend and pioneer in the UK rap game,” the statement from the account read. “We’ve been staying in touch recently sharing our struggles with health issues and keeping each other spirits up, especially as fathers and staying strong for our kids.”
Wretch 32, a popular UK rapper, also gave his condolences.
“We lost a real north London rap pioneer,” Wretch 32 posted. “RIP sway you’ll be missed by so many thank you for everything brother.”
His cause of death is unknown at this time.

In 2005, he made MOBO history, beating global heavyweights including 50 Cent and The Game to win Best Hip-Hop Act – a huge moment for Sway and UK Hip Hop.

Sway DaSafo, A Legacy
Sway was an important part of the unsigned UK rap scene. He won a MOBO award in 2005, beating out The Game and 50 Cent for best Hip Hop act. Sway also became the first UK rapper to win a BET Hip Hop award, breaking down barriers for british rap.
The pioneer went unsigned for most of the 00s, blowing up off word of mouth, mixtapes, underground shows, and pure talent. He helped pave the way for UK rap to get the current respect it’s earned.
He served as a mentor both Idris Elba and Ed Sheeran’s music careers. He appeared on the first two episodes of British crime drama Top Boy.
His music lives on, as singles such as “Little Derek,” “Still Speedin,” and “Level Up,” were hit singles in the UK.
Akon and Konvict music eventually signed him, where he stayed a number of years before going back to independence.
