The 2017 According 2 Hip-Hop Award For Most Disappointing Album Of The Year Goes 2 Eminem’s “Revival”.
From the moment that Eminem stepped into the BET Cypher at the 2017 BET Hip-Hop Awards many Hip-Hop heads had the notion that there was going to be an album coming. Also factoring in the fact that Eminem used his time on the mic to diss the President of The United States was added shock value.
What we have learned from past Eminem rollouts is that shock value is always a key ingredient in a successful Eminem rollout. Since the beginning of Eminem’s career he has used the names of others that are current key talking points in the media to further conversations and strategically place his music in that conversation.
Eminem showed up to the BET Cypher with a new look and used his moment to separate himself from President Trump supporters even if they were fans of his. His Cypher was met with mixed reviews overall and even more negative reaction once Eminem admitted himself that he was disappointed that the President didn’t respond to him.
We all know that all mistakes can be cleared up with great music. Eminem releases his album’s first single with a feature from the biggest star in music by way of Beyonce. This is full proof right? Everyone likes Beyonce, Beyonce never disappoints. Well, “Walk On Water” was a critical failure. Then it was announced that Eminem’s album would be produced by the legendary Rick Rubin and mixed by the legendary Dr. Dre. This would give some fans that feel Eminem hasn’t dropped an acceptable album in 15 years some hope.
Then the European MTV VMAs gave Eminem a Hip-Hop artist of the year award days after his single “Walk On Water” was released with an album not even released yet. The hype was high but the actual album wasn’t. The album was a stretch on so many levels. There even songs where Eminem was trying to rhyme with the Migos flow smh. At this stage of the game it is very hard to imagine the Eminem will be able to put forth a great album ever again in his career.
