Afroman celebrated his 52nd birthday on Tuesday (July 28), by alerting the world to his decision to take legal action against one the cops who raided his Ohio home in 2022.
Just months after beating a defamation lawsuit brought by seven officers, the “Because I Got High” rapper has turned the tables by suing former deputy Brian K. Newland. In a complaint filed July 27, Afroman claims Newland’s lawsuit amounted to malicious prosecution, arguing it was filed to harass him despite lacking legal merit.
The rapper is seeking at least $25,000 in legal fees and damages. On Instagram, he celebrated the filing by writing, “I’m suing the police officer who stole my $400, then had the audacity to sue me for $1.5 million,” calling it a birthday gift to himself.
After the failed raid on his home in 2022, where deputies searched the property over suspicions of drug trafficking and kidnapping but filed no charges, Afroman used his home security footage in music videos mocking the officers, including “Lemon Pound Cake.”
Newland, along with six others, filed a lawsuit the next year claiming they suffered “emotional distress, embarrassment, ridicule, loss of reputation, and humiliation” because of the videos. A jury later dismissed those charges after just hours of deliberation.
