Hip-hop legends Black Thought and Redman recently shared a candid conversation in a new Rolling Stone interview that brought some long-lost collaborations to light. During the sit-down, the two iconic MCs interviewed each other, reflecting on their mutual respect — and a couple of records fans have never heard.
Redman recalled recording a verse years ago for The Roots, Black Thought’s legendary group, but said he never heard back after submitting it. “I was actually hurt from that, bro,” Redman admitted, suggesting that maybe he “cursed too much” on the verse and that might’ve been why it never made the cut.
Black Thought explained what happened behind the scenes, pointing to the late Richard Nichols, The Roots’ longtime manager and creative director. “You know what happened? Rich, rest in peace — who was very much the brains of The Roots operation — he ran such a tight ship, it was hard for me to place verses on The Roots albums. He would shoot down every submission, and there was something about that verse that Rich didn’t like. I can’t remember what it was. I’m gonna find that verse, and if I listen to it, I can tell you why Rich didn’t rock with it.”
Black Thought then dropped another gem: he has an unreleased album, “Streams of Thought Vol. 4,” recorded in 2020, that also features Redman. The only thing holding it up? Sample clearances.
Despite the delay, Black Thought confirmed that the collaboration between the two lyrical heavyweights will eventually see the light of day. For hip-hop purists, that’s long-overdue good news — two masters of the craft finally sharing their chemistry with the world.
