Brooklyn Landlord Wants $1,250 A Month To Keep The Iconic Biggie Mural Up

Brooklyn, New York has become the face of gentrification and everything it’s about. Removing many cultural aspects of this historic borough to move in higher paying tenants. Well, gentrification in Brooklyn has reared it’s ugly head again and this time the late great Notorious B.I.G’s mural may suffer.

The two story Biggie mural that was painted in 2015 by Zimer & Rocko is located on a building at Bedford Ave & Quincy Street. The landlord of the building Samuel Berkowitz wants the painting removed so that he can add new windows for his building’s renovation. Berkowitz told the media “Why should I keep it? I don’t even see the point of the discussion. I could demolish the building if I wanted to, I don’t need no permission from anyone except the DOB.”

According to DNA Info Berkowitz has secured permits in March for the work, which includes a gut renovation of the second floor and the addition of two windows to the wall with the mural, Department of Buildings records show. It is being said that for $1,250 a month Berkowitz would keep this mural up. Do you think Biggie’s friends that were number one and two on the Forbes list this year in Hip-Hop should pitch in for this or is this just not their responsibility?
