One of the biggest sports days on the calendar, the NBA trade deadline, is this coming Thursday (February 5). And some big names could be on the move to new teams—one of those names is Los Angeles Clippers star James Harden.
Harden, Clippers Working on Blockbuster Trade
According to a February 2nd report from NBA insider Shams Charania, the franchise is working with the 11-time All-Star to find him a new home ahead of the trade deadline on Thursday. And multiple suitors are interested in acquiring his services.
Per Sports Illustrated Senior writer Chris Mannix, the Cleveland Cavaliers are among those interested in acquiring the former NBA MVP. According to Mannix, the two sides have already had “advanced discussions” on a potential blockbuster deal that would send Cavaliers star Darius Garland to the Houston Rockets.
Harden appears to have found the fountain of youth in the city of Angels this offseason. He is averaging 25.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 8.1 assists on the year. On the other hand, Garland has had a slower start to the 2025-26 season. He is averaging 18 points per game, 2.4 assists, and 6.9 rebounds. He has also missed the Cavs’ last nine games after suffering a toe injury against the Philadelphia 76ers on January 14.
This is a trade that makes sense for both sides. The Kawhi and James Harden experiment hasn’t worked out that well thus far. Sitting in 9th place in the Western Conference this season, a playoff berth seems like a long shot. And with the Oklahoma City Thunder owning their first-round draft pick this year, they won’t have a chance to rebuild through one of this year’s college basketball players.
For the Cavaliers, they have fared well with Garland being out for most of the season. They currently sit in 5th place in the Eastern Conference. Adding a player of Harden’s caliber could be the move that finally puts them over the hump.
