Colin Kaepernick has responded to Jay-Z after the rapper referenced the former NFL quarterback during a recent freestyle while addressing criticism surrounding his business partnerships.
Jay-Z pushed back on critics by suggesting Kaepernick had accepted a settlement from the NFL and was restricted by a non-disparagement agreement. However, Kaepernick told NBC’s Lester Holt that he did not sign a non-disparagement agreement when he settled his grievance with the league in 2019.
Kaepernick also argued that Jay-Z is still dealing with the backlash he received after partnering with the NFL in 2019, saying the criticism appears to remain a sensitive issue years later.
According to Kaepernick, Jay-Z’s willingness to enter partnerships that some view as conflicting with grassroots interests reflects an attempt to reshape the conversation. He described the rapper’s recent comments as evidence of a “guilty conscience.”
The exchange comes as Jay-Z has also faced criticism over his recent partnership with Target, including an exclusive version of Reasonable Doubt. Kaepernick, meanwhile, has chosen not to sell his upcoming memoir, The Perilous Fight, through Target and is instead partnering with the National Black Bookstore Association.
