According to Dame, there were plans for Lupe to join the legendary label, but the deal ultimately never came together. He says Jay-Z made the decision not to sign the Chicago rapper, despite interest in bringing him into the Roc-A-Fella fold.
Dame also reflected on what was happening behind the scenes at the label during that period, offering more insight into the internal dynamics that shaped Roc-A-Fella’s roster and business decisions.
Lupe would eventually go on to build his own successful career, becoming one of the most respected lyricists of his generation with albums like Food & Liquor and The Cool.
The revelation adds another interesting chapter to Roc-A-Fella’s history and leaves fans wondering how different Lupe Fiasco’s career — and the label itself — might have looked if the signing had actually happened.
